If you’re a fellow New Englander, it’s time to put away summer dresses and pull out the sweaters! Turning over your closet each season allows you to reassess what you have, what you need and also create a donation pile of goods that no longer serve a purpose. I turn over my closet twice a year, once for warm weather and once for cold.

I have Elfa Closet system within my Cloffice (closet / office ;-)) room and over a year later, still love it! It’s so fun because the hyper-organized nature of the Elfa Closet system makes it feel as though you’re shopping every time you get dressed.

Today I’m sharing tips for organizing your fall and winter clothes, whether you have this particular closet system or not.

  • Use velvet hangers to hand light sweaters.
Regular hangers cause indentations to the shoulders of blouses, tshirts and sweaters and ultimately stretch out and ruin them. The heavier the top, the greater the chance of hangers ruining them. I cannot suggest these velvet hangers enough! They do not cause indentations. This allows you to hang up sweaters which, if you’re like me, is the best solution because sweaters are much too bulky to try to place within drawers typically.
  • Store leggings in drawer for easy grab and go.
If you’re like me, leggings are what you reach for most during cold New England days. I store my faux leather leggings, seamless leggings,  cotton leggings and these amazing airlift leggings all within one drawer for quick grab-and-go. I keep the “fancy” leggings (airlift and fayx leather) on one side and casual (seamless and cotton) on the other.
    • Faux leather leggings: run true to size. Great for dressing up for date night or elevating an otherwise casual day look. They are very high quality, thick to smooth you out and the horizontal band around the waist is very flattering. I have had two pairs for three+ years and they look brand new. I usually pair mine with an oversized sweater and pointed black toe flats. These flats are my favorite and I own them in three colors, but go up a size.
    • Airlift leggings: Honestly my favorite pair of leggings at the moment because they really to lift and smooth. I like that the material has a sheen to them, but they don’t scream ‘athletic material’. They can be worn casually or dressed up on date night! I sized down and to have compression. I wear them with these white slip on sneakers on the weekend all the time!
    • Seamless leggings: A great casual option that has less compression than the above and are very comfy. They aren’t as casual as the ones below and don’t attract lint. I love that these are seamless which really makes a polished look. I have both a small (one size down) and medium (TTS) in these depending on the compression I want to achieve. I’d say grab your regular size.
    • Cotton leggings: A classic every girl needs in her closet. This brand is my favorite pair of casual, cotton leggings because they are flattering and under $70. The horizontal band around the belly sucks you in and the thick material throughout smooths you. They are long even on me (5’7″) which is great for tall girls.

  • Store heavy or bulky sweaters in drawer or bin.
That said, for super large, bulky sweaters that weigh a ton, I suggest storing them in a bin. I use these $13 affordable ones from Target and fill up three. That way, I know bulky pieces that are much too heavy to ever live on a hanger are safely stored there for quick access.
  • Use shapers for tall boots.
I need to grab these for my tall riding boots and Stuart Weitzman over-the-knee boots. Boots shapers do just that, save the shape and form of your boots!
  • Hang layers in a quick to grab location.
You’ll see on the right hand side, I have denim jackets, zip ups and vests in their own section to quickly layer on pieces for extra warmth. I also hung up all my favorite sweatpants that are from Spiritual Gangster. I love these because they don’t have bulky pockets, run true to size and have fun prints/colors!

I hope these five tips for organizing your fall wardrobe was helpful! Remember that I have a full process and quality review of my Elfa Closet here. Keep scrolling for more views of the closet as well. Xo Mindy
