Summer Hair Care Routine for Frizz-Prone Hair

Ever since sharing my au natural hair on Instagram stories a few weeks ago, I had so many of your reach out about having similar hair types and actually being taken back by mine since I always have it blown out! While my hair is usually blown out sleek, I have very, very textured hair that’s very high maintenance. It’s naturally wicked wavy, super thick and very curly around my face. While I have grown to really love my hair now, that was not always the case.

Ever since I can remember I have fought with my hair. With having obnoxiously thick hair combined with the textured tendencies, I just didn’t know how to work with it in my younger years. Girls in my class would have low maintenance, sleek straight Princess hair, I always had a crazy wavy situation occurring on my head.

I remember like yesterday, getting my first straightener in middle school for Christmas. On school days, I would legit wake up an hour before I actually needed to so that my straightener would be warmed up and I could get my hair straight as can be. This huge blue Conair straightener that I coveted took 30 minutes.. 30 MINUTES to warm up and I’m pretty sure the hot plates were 6X5 inches wide. It was one of the original, commercial straighteners to hit the market.

I can only imagine how in awe 2003 middle school Mindy would be if she could fast forward to see hair technology now. My current straightener warms up in 30 seconds flat and doens’t weigh eight pounds lol. 😆

If you couldn’t guess, I was [and still am] a total girly girl. Most middle schoolers couldn’t even handle brushing their teeth before getting to school, but here I was waking up before the sun to perfect my hair style! My dad later graduated me to a Chi which is still kicking around in beauty drawer today.

I think it’s natural to grow up wishing you had the opposite hair type. That whole “the grass is always greener” thing, right? 😉 Curly girls want straight hair. Brunettes want blonde hair. Short wants long. Straight wants curls and so on. While I wished away my crazy thick, wavy hair for most of my adolescents, I’m now SO happy and grateful for what God gave me. My thick hair allows me to create pretty braids, really full ponys and fun half up dos. The texture holds a curling iron curl for six days – uh what?! Is it high maintenance? Yes? But fun and pretty – yup that too.

If you also have textured hair that’s prone to frizz, I’m here today to share varying products that help maintain textured hair. I’ve tried so many serums, creams, mousses, sprays – you name it. Being a blogger, you receive loads of PR packages to test products before they hit the market. Some of these products today were discovered from PR packages, some are holy grail products I’ve used since college. All are products I use all summer long [and many all year long], to calm my frizz-prone hair and work with the texture God gave me!

With that said, beauty products are very expensive so I take beauty review very seriously since I don’t want you wasting your hard earned money.Hence why this took me five days to write! 95% of what I am sent by brands or products I test never hit the blog or my social channels. I take my recommendations very seriously to serve you and allow you to find a product that actually works and makes you feel beautiful!

Below are thirteen products I rounded up that have help reduce frizz and smooth textured hair. That does not mean you should feel pressure to have all thirteen! Sometimes I’ll read a bloggers post and I’m like “Oh cool you have a skin care regimen that costs $2k”. #Relatable 😯 These are products I’ve used over a span of 10 years. They are the gems I’ve budgets for and accumulated along the way.I suggest grabbing one or two products listed today and see how your hair reacts! Sometimes just altering one product can make a huge difference in your beauty regimen.Summer Hair Care Routine for Frizz-Prone HairONE
LIVING PROOF NO FRIZZ SHAMPOO: SHOP
LIVING PROOF CONDITIONER: SHOP
This product line is powered by Living Proof’s patented Healthy Hair Molecule (OFPMA), so it weightlessly blocks humidity, smooths hair texture so strands are polished and frictionless and nourishes and conditions–leaving your hair feeling super moisturized.

After using up my bottles that Living Proof sent me to test, I grabbed the next PR shampoo and conditioner package in the line up. That’s when I really realized how great this line is. One key to reducing frizz is hydration which this line provides. The frizz is cooled down a notch and my hair is so much more moisturized and nourished compared to other brands.

TWO
BUMBLE & BUMBLE UV DETANGLER AND PROTECTANT: SHOP
If you’ve been following my blog from the beginning, you know that this product is a holy grail in my book. It was actually my first ever Sephora purchase which was a huge deal since I was on a college budget and saved up for it! With that said, I’ve been using it for 5+ years and no detangler I’ve tested compares.

While it works wonders working through tangles gently, it’s also is a UV and heat protectant. But what does this product have to do with aiding against frizz? Well it’s a cream texture with sparks moisture into your strands and in turn, cooperates stlying better, holds style better and in turn won’t frizz up as drastically. This product is a quadruple threat (more bang for your buck!) with being a detangler, heat protectant and nourishing cream all in one.

Right after I get out of the shower, I spray this all over my hair from root to tip and comb through with this gentle brush.

LIVING PROOF BLOW OUT SERUM: SHOP
SO GOOD. SO GOOD YOU GUYS! Living Proof sent me this hair blow out serum a few months ago and it’s amazing in cutting down your blow dry time. I feel like there are different “types” of frizz which this aids in:

1. Weather frizz – dampness/humidity in the air.
2. Application frizz – caused by touching and tousling your hair too much.
3. Malnourished frizz – caused by a lack of hydration.

The serum aspect of the product helps bring hydration to your hair and creates a shield against humidity. I also have seen that is strongly aids against the application frizz. When I blow dry my hair, I free dry it for a bit before round brushing. Oftentimes this free style blow dry can cause a whole lotta frizz which takes forever to deal with. I have seen a HUGE difference in my hair’s texture when I use this serum. My blow dry time is cut down because of the product’s magic, but also because it reduces frizz during the restyle blow out.

THREE
LIVING PROOF REPAIR LOTION: SHOP
This product will help with frizz that is brought on from lack of moisture and hydration. I use this on damps hair and apply from mid lock to end, avoiding my roots. This is a cream product that gives your hair a jolt of moisture and is specifically formulated to mend and prevent split ends.

I’ve also noticed that when I wear my hair in it’s natural state, this repair lotion allows my curls to not frizz up as well. So if you embrace your natural curls and find them to have a touch of frizzy texture, this product may help add in extra hydration to those strands.

THE DRYBAR BUTTERCUP BLOW DRYER: SHOP
THE DRY BAR DOUBLE PINT ROUND BRUSH: SHOP
Previously, I had never invested in a blow dryer. What’s the point? They all just blow air at your hair and you end up with the same result. Wrong. So wrong.

While some girls have easy low maintenance hair and can get away with hotel blow dryers or drugstore dryers, girls with thick, textured hair that have to blow dry their strands are better off investing in one that aids their hair and also cuts down on dry time.

If you are constantly using a blow dryer or hot tools on your hair, investing in one that won’t caused damage is important. This one somehow make my hair super shiny. I don’t know how they do it. My drugstore dryer used to leave my hair dry and brittle.

Higher end blow dryers also cut down your dry time which was my biggest shock when I first got this. With my thick, textured hair, I’d take 35 minutes to dry it out with my old drug store dryer. And that’s doesn’t even include a blow out with a round brush. That’s legit just rough drying it to then straighten [because the drug store dryer 100% does not give a good blow out.. it’s not an option].

This blow dryer with this round brush sliced my dry time in 1/4 and doens’t cause a frizzy mess. PLUS it is a power house for an at-home blow out.

Now onto maintenance items. The products below help me maintain my blow out without needing so many touch ups to frizzy areas during the week.

FIVE
MOROCCAN OIL OIL SERUM: SHOP
This serum has many, many benefits that you can read more of here. I apply this on dry hair. I use one pump and apply to my mid hair to end [avoiding roots] after my blow out is complete. You’ll find that it gives a surge of moisture and create softness, but the real reason I use it is that it brings my hair to a normal texture and size. Even after all the products above, summer heat can cause my hair to grow three times in size. This serum cools my hair’s texture down!

SLIP SILK PILLOW CASE: SHOP
Not only is this case proven to hair reduce friction while sleeping [and in turn frizz], it’s also amazing for your skin! While it’s a splurge, they last year over year.

INVISIBOBBLE HAIR TIE: SHOP
This hair tie leaves less of a kink on your hair than normal hair ties. To reduce frizz and to avoid messing up my blow out, I pin my hair with this on the top of my head at night. The less hair you have on your pillow, the less of a chance you’ll lay on top of it and in turn – less friction caused to your strands.

LIVING PROOF RESTORE MASK: SHOP
For store bought hair masks, this one is my all time favorite. Sometimes your hair is simply in a funk and it’s often tied to needing a boost of hydration. This one does exactly that. My hair always looks and feels like a million bucks after I use it. I apply it once every other week [sometimes more often in the summer with UV rays being more prevalent].

While I clean our home or work from home, I’ll apply from mid hair to end, pin it up on my head and let it sit in for a couple hours.
oribe-anti-humidity-spray-2ORIBE ANTI-HUMIDITY SPRAY: SHOP
Fair wanring – do not purchase this product unless you’re okay with becoming addicted. The scnet alone will make you fall in love which makes sense because Oribe’s scents were curated by Tom Ford!

This anti-humidity spray acts as a humidity shield. I discovered it last summer from my hair dresser and cannot leave the house without it during the summer. After styling my hair, I’ll spray it all throughout as the finishing touch.

It definitely protects against my hair from growing three times in size and gaining a lot of texture through the body.
LIVING PROOF INSTANT DE-FRIZZER: SHOP
This product is magic in a bottle! I keep the travel size in my purse so I can spot treat my frizz throughout the hot summer day. I’ll often see curls pop up along my hairline, so I’ll apply this on the curl, then slide my fingers over the hair and the frizz is gone. It’s crazy!

This differs from the Oribe product above because it’s more of a spot treatment where as the Oribe is a preventative maintenance anti-humidity shield. you spray on pre-frizz.  I’ve never come across another product like it. I find myself learning towards my hot tools for less touch ups and reaching for this product instead!

Phew- that was a lot so if you’re still with me WOO! I hope one or two of these products help you tame your frizz-prone hair this summer! Xo Mindy
