Recently S and I spent spent the weekend celebrating his 26 birthday! With being together for over nine years, we have many traditions we look forward to throughout the year, many centering around birthdays. S and I both love surprises, so when we plan each others celebrations, we keep it 100% top secret.. other then some gift shaking of course, haha!
In addition to gifts, we like to surprise each other experiences. Whether it’s something we can do together that day or tickets to something like a Red Sox game in the near future! A couple Saturday’s ago, I had planned to surprise S in the morning with 18 rounds of golf, but since the weather didn’t seem promising, plan b was installed. I decided to hop in the car do a surprise drive to Dave and Busters since we’ve never been! It’s so fun telling him to get ready when he has no idea where we’re going 😛 We played games, redeemed tickets for way too many nerd ropes and enjoy ed a fun lunch together. After that, we returned home for dinner at The Bancroft [ummm best dinner we’ve ever had], opened gifts and met up with our BFFs at a bar. A day well celebrated!
Planning the day and dinner is usually easy, even when rain interjects itself. The struggle area is gifts! As many guys are, S is a minimalist. He doesn’t want five different sunglasses, ten sneakers or things that aren’t useful for him day-to-day. After almost a decade of birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas’… I have to get really creative when thinking of gifts. I also am not a fan of stocking him up on clothes, unless it’s one splurge-worthy piece he won’t purchase himself. With that, I wanted to provide a few birthday gift ideas for your guy today.
MAKE HIS WEEK EASIER: With S being Italian, he has to shave every other day for work. I like to treat him to The Art of Shaving products because they make a daunting task a bit more enjoyable and luxurious. Think of a task your fiance or husband has to do every week or daily and think of how you can make it a little more easier.
REPLACE WORK DOWN SPORTS PIECES: Baseball hats and football sweatshirts may look a bit worn down after a few years. While some men may be nostalgic to this pieces, consider updating them possibly in a new color or fit!
VERSATILE EVERYDAY ITEMS: From sleek kicks, designer cologne, or classic sunnies, he’ll wear these pieces almost everyday. Since men tend to be minimalist, ensuring that pieces are versatile is key!
A PIECE OF HIS CHILDHOOD: Since S parents live across the country, I really try to incorporate his family traditions into our own. When I saw this record player, I immediately thought of his dad grilling up food on Saturday nights with serving trays of anitpasto appetizers while listening to Dean Martin. I just knew it’d be the perfect piece to incorporate those old Italian songs into our little family because listening on an iPhone just doens’t cut it. This was one of s’ gifts this year, along with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra vinyls. We have had it less than a week and have already used it SO much.
SPLURGE WORTHY CLOTHING: S likes to get by with what he has, so treating him to a piece that he wouldn’t buy himself is something I always consider for his birthday as well. This Patagonia layer is a great example of a quality piece he’d love and get a lot of use out of.
I hope this helps you find the perfect gift for your boyfriend, fiance or husband! Xo Mindy
